Sullivan to move his third-party blog to a brand-new format and system.
iCal+iPhone+Google calendars untangled!

After lamenting various types of Calendar syncs and assorted subscriptions, my Q Digital Studio calendars are sorted! For a while, I used a combination of iCal on my MacBook Pro and iPhone, as well as some Google Calendar subscriptions. My calendars included quite an assortment of work meetings, vacation schedules, personal activities, family stuff, volunteering, and project milestones. I mustered up the courage to untangle these, and now am using Google Calendars for all calendars and syncing them on my laptop and iPhone. With Google CalDav, my iCals can work like normal (color coded, alarms, enter events from my computer or phone and sync to the master calendar.) It’s amazing! And so tidy!

If you want to master your calendars with any combination of Google / Mac / iPhone, you will find these links useful.
1. Google Calendars synced with iCal on your Mac
2. Google Calendars synced with your iPhone (your phone needs OS 3+)

If you have existing iCal calendars that you want to migrate from your computer to Google, you can do this easily! Select the calendar to export. Go to File > Export > Export (file type should be .ics). Then import the exported calendar data into a freshly created Google calendar (you can do this right on your mac).

Hurray for being organized!

Whiteboard Talk Bubble

We can write on our wall -- with our new whiteboard in the shape of a talk bubble! Our custom whiteboard is finally complete. We marked out, sanded and primed the outline of a talk bubble in our conference room. And then, using the magical mixture of whiteboard paint from Idea Paint, we painted on a whiteboard. The paint is amazing. It paints on any relatively smooth, primed surface, and works just as well as a regular whiteboard. You can use normal whiteboard markers and erasers.

It did have some challenges: We sanded our semi-textured walls nice and smooth. The whiteboard paint itself is an epoxy like mixture that goes on in only one coat. No mistakes allowed! Then, the whiteboard paint needed an entire week to cure. Phew, I am glad the wait is over! Come on over if you want to check it out.

Lovely typography on the web

We're using Typekit for the beautiful typefaces on our web site.Once upon a time, our web site Photoshop template was designed with Helvetica Neue Light for the body copy, and American Typewriter for the headlines. We had lofty visions of setting up sIFR, or another tool that would use some magic flash and javascript to render those fonts on the screen, making them available for the visitors who don’t have them installed (which would be most people!) Time passed, and in our latest web site content spruce up, I realized our web site needed new typography.

So, I decided to test out Typekit, and see if it was really as easy as my web design colleagues say. Well, it is! Get an account, find some typefaces, insert a tiny snippet of code, update the stylesheet and that’s it! I’m in love. Well, almost. The fonts render beautifully in Safari, newest Firefox, and IE7. They don’t display in Chrome on Windows, but do on Chrome for Mac OS, and not surprisingly, though they render in IE6 they look a little funky because they’re not anti-aliased.

What do you think? Can you see the new look? (By the way, the new typefaces are not Helvetica Neue and American Typewriter, even though I still love those.) Learn about the typefaces used on this site >

The Studio: before and after

Suite 201, our killer studio space, is just about finished to perfection. We moved into our studio space at the end of August. Right away, we undertook a flurry of improvements (desks, shelves, new wall color, internet access). Since then we’ve been slowly adding and improving (framed art, magnetic wall, more furniture).

Now it is really starting to feel finished! Check out the transformation in these before and after photos.

Magnetic paint really works

We now have a magnetic wall in our studio! After a little sanding and three coats of paint with some kind of magic metal in it, we have a magnetic “accent” wall. We can hang up postcards, business cards, and posters. Check it out in the photo.

The magnetic paint goes on flat and nearly black. A top coat can go over it, so it can be any color you want. However, we were reluctant to take away any of the magnet oomph. Plus, it fits with the other black accents in the studio.

Q Digital Studio launches abstract New Orleans artist Sidonie Villere's web site. Q Digital Studio launched a new web site for abstract artist Sidonie Villere. Sidonie came to us with the request to make her old web site cleaner, easier-to-navigate, and show off her artwork so that the subtleties of her paintings and sculptures stand out. It is a tall order to design a web site for an incredible artist! We accomplished the site design by keeping design elements to a minimum with the main focus of the design stacked typography for the links throughout her site.
